Volunteering Frequently Asked Questions
How much of a time commitment does Community Action expect out of me?
Continuous volunteers are expected, at a minimum, to volunteer 4 hours a month. However, it is desired that the volunteer works 2 hours a week.
Does Community Action have group or one time volunteer activities?
Yes, please click here to see a list of group volunteer activities. We closely work with the United Way Twin Cities and the Caring Connection website for group projects and will require you to go through their website to sign up.
Each volunteer position is different and we generally like to have volunteers who are 14 years old or older if volunteering independently. However, if you are younger and have a special project or specific interest to use in volunteering we would consider your application. In addition, we enjoy having family volunteers or group volunteers where minors are encouraged to participate if under supervision.
What is the application process?
Every volunteer must fill out an application which can be found here. You need the free version of Adobe Reader to download the application. Once the volunteer program receives your application they will be in contact with you to set up an interview. During the interview the volunteer staff will want to get to know you, your passions, and motivations for volunteering. After the interview the volunteer staff communicates with each department and to find a specific position that fits your needs. Please keep in mind that this is a selection process and not all applicants are accepted into the volunteer program. We reserve the right to place volunteers in the area we feel is best suited to their skills and the needs of the agency. Once accepted, volunteers must attend all training in order to be placed in a position.
The volunteer program provides an orientation to Community Action, the department you will be working with and HIPPA training to every volunteer who serves with Community Action. In addition to this, we provide seminars and classes that will enrich the volunteer’s expertise in a topic pertinent to the department you are serving.
What qualities does a good volunteer possess?
The qualities of a good volunteer posses the willingness to learn and be flexible while offering up their expertise and skills to benefit Community Action. A good volunteer is excited and passionate about the area they are serving in and has a willingness to be passionate about their task while serving the array of diverse individuals.
Are there benefits for volunteering?
Yes, our volunteers are learning new skills while working with people that have connection to networks of people. In return for a generous donation of your time, Community Action offers our volunteers the following: • Discounts at businesses throughout the Twin Cities through the MERSC card. • Free parking during volunteer shift. • Free or reduced rates to enrichment workshops or lectures.
