Since its inception in 1964, Head Start has provided millions of preschool children from low-income families with a comprehensive preschool education program designed to meet their educational, health, social, emotional, nutritional, and psychological needs. In addition, the program recognizes that parents are the most important influence on a child’s development. Parent education, skill building, and leadership opportunities are an essential part of every Head Start program.
Families in the program reflect the rich diversity of Ramsey County’s population. Up to 20 different languages are spoken in Head Start homes, with the majority speaking English, Hmong, Somali, or Spanish. Program staff also represent a wide diversity of nationalities and cultures. Nearly 30% of the staff are bilingual and therefore able to speak to newly-arrived families in their native language, translate written materials, interpret when needed, and welcome children into their new Head Start environment.
