Expanded Income Eligibility and Crisis Funds for Energy Assistance

The Minnesota Department of Commerce has expanded eligibility for the state’s Energy Assistance Program. Now, households earning 60 percent of the state median income will be eligible. Previously, the limit was set at 50 percent.  If you were denied or did not qualify for Energy Assistance earlier this year, please note that as of February 4, 2014, the income guidelines for the 2013 – 2014 program year have changed and you may now be eligible.  An Individual earning less than $27,232 per year is now eligible.  Households of four earning less than $52,370 per year would now qualify under the new guidelines.  For a complete list of income qualifications please visit our website at http://www.caprw.org/community-action-services/energy-assistance/

Along with increasing the income eligibility for the 2013-2014 Energy Assistance Program, the Department of Commerce has also increased the crisis benefits from $500 to $1000 for households that heat with propane or heating oil.  Due to ongoing sub-zero temperatures that have caused high prices and propane shortages throughout the country, the State Emergency Operations Center has establish a public hotline for Minnesotans with propane issues or questions.  Minnesota residents with questions about the current propane situation or who are in danger of running out of heating fuel can call 651-297-1304 or toll free at 1-800-657-3504. The Hotline will operate Monday – Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm.

The Energy Assistance Program provides help for heating costs, electric costs, and energy crisis situations. The program will help to pay a portion of home energy bills for income-eligible customers. The deadline to apply for Energy Assistance is May 31.  Residents of Ramsey and Washington Counties can call Community Action at 651-645-6470 to apply and or by visiting Community Action located at 450 Syndicate St. North, Suite 122, Saint Paul, MN 55104.
